The painted or drawn image remains a basic tool of self-definition and understanding of the human condition. The Painting and Drawing emphasis in the School of Art and Design supports the investigation of diverse approaches, histories, and forms of painting and drawing. The program views art-making as a process of inquiry that is continually sharpened by experience, knowledge, and practice. A diverse faculty brings a broad range of voices to individual study.
Painting and Drawing recognizes and is informed by the deep roots of its history as applied to contemporary methods and concepts. Painting and Drawing continues to play a significant role in contemporary culture.
Painting and Drawing are viewed as independent but overlapping disciplines. The area provides a wide range of courses designed for students of all levels, backgrounds, and interests. We have a sustained history and continuing priority of integrating visiting artists, critics, and curators, as well as scholars, into the core of its instruction.
By enabling the development of painting and drawing as a means of individual expression, reflection, and communication, we encourage our students to cultivate their own points of view.
